In San Francisco, we recommend staying in the Fisherman’s Wharf area (the Italian Quarter) or in the Union Square area. There are also a several inexpensive and decent hotels in the Van Ness/Lombard area (not a central location, but only a few minutes’ drive from the Fisherman’s Wharf area). Nob Hill and Marina neighborhoods are also pleasant and have some nice hotels. We advise not to stay in the Tenderlion neighborhood or south of Market Street – due to the many homeless people in these areas.
See a map of the areas of the city where you shouldn’t spend the night (marked in yellow) as well as the location of the areas where most of the hotels are concentrated – Union Square and the Fishermen’s Wharfs (marked in red):
*All prices listed are for a double room, midweek in august.
Our recommendations are based on personal experience, on valid recommendation of our customers, or on comparison of several websites over time. We are not responsible for the hotels’ quality or service.
